ADHD Evaluation Process

The typical ADHD evaluation process looks like with Through the Woods Mental Health Services includes:

Consultation (30+ minutes): During the virtual consultation with the parent(s) or caregiver(s), we will learn more about the goals for evaluation to ensure that our services would be the right fit for your family. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any specific questions regarding the process or procedures as well as inform us of your child’s school’s specific requirements.

Test Administration: Test materials will be provided to parents, child/adolescent, and the school if appropriate via email for completion between the consultation and the feedback session. We use a combination of assessment tools, including the Behavior Assessment System for Children – Third Edition (BASC-3), Conners 4th Edition, Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale – Parent Report (WFIRS-P), and the Guare Executive Skills Questionnaire. The tests administered are individualized to each person so there may be additional tests provided.

Clinical Interview (60-95 minutes): During the clinical interview our therapists will spend time gathering insights from the parents and child regarding the child’s daily experiences, family dynamics, school history, behavioral and social history, and general background.

Records/Review: After the completion of all previous steps including the consultation, clinical interviews, and test administration, your clinician will review your scores, records, and develop your written report with an appropriate diagnosis.

Feedback Session (45+ minutes): During the feedback session we want to collaborate with the parents and child before finalizing the report. We will discuss the findings from the evaluation, the diagnosis the data supports, and future recommendations including school accommodations. During this time, we hope to hear what the parent(s) child feels would be most helpful and explore how we can best meet their needs.

Through the Woods Mental Health Services offers ADHD evaluation virtually and in person depending on your location. It is important to understand that different clinicians may conduct different testing based on their personal preferences and beliefs. There are many evidenced based practices that will provide accurate diagnosis. Though we aim to provide comprehensive evaluations we cannot guarantee that the tests in our typical assessment will meet your child’s school’s requirements for diagnosis. Therefore, it is important that you contact your school to learn about their specific requirements prior to testing.

Through the Woods Mental Health Services offers tiers to our services depending on your family’s specific needs. For more information check here.
